Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) is a Non-Destructive Testing method used to detect surface and near-surface discontinuities in suitable ferromagnetic materials.
Detecting Surface and Near-Surface Discontinuities
At KLASIC Oil Inspection Services Limited, MT is used as part of our conventional NDT capability to support weld inspection, component examination, fabrication quality control and in-service inspection.
HOW MT WORKS
The component is magnetized and magnetic particles are applied to the inspection area. Where a suitable discontinuity interrupts the magnetic field, particles accumulate around the indication, making the discontinuity detectable.
This makes MT particularly effective for identifying cracks and other discontinuities that may be difficult to identify through ordinary visual examination.
APPLICATIONS
MT can be used for the examination of:
- Welds
- Structural components
- Forgings
- Machinery components
- Lifting equipment
- Pressure equipment
- Shafts and pins
- Fabricated components
- Ferromagnetic piping components
DEFECTS THAT MAY BE DETECTED
Depending on the application, MT may identify:
- Surface cracks
- Near-surface cracks
- Lack of fusion at accessible areas
- Seams
- Laps
- Other relevant surface and near-surface discontinuities
WHEN MT IS USED
MT is commonly applied during:
- Fabrication
- Welding inspection
- Maintenance
- Repair verification
- Shutdowns and turnarounds
- In-service inspections
- Critical component examinations
WHY KLASIC?
Our MT services are performed using appropriate inspection procedures and equipment, with results documented and reported according to the defined inspection requirements.
Where the material or inspection objective is unsuitable for MT, we can recommend an alternative NDT method such as PT, UT or other appropriate techniques.
